Overview
Rome doesn't organize its history into a museum; it simply keeps building around it. Roman ruins sit beside Renaissance churches, which sit beside apartment buildings with laundry drying on the balconies. The center is compact enough to cover on foot, and getting lost between the major sights is usually how you find the best small trattoria of the trip.
Getting There
Fiumicino Airport (FCO) has a direct Leonardo Express train to Termini station in 32 minutes. Ciampino (CIA), used by budget carriers, connects via bus to Termini in about 40 minutes. Once in the city, walking and the Metro's two main lines cover most visitor needs.
Top Things to Do
- Book Colosseum and Roman Forum tickets together in advance; the combined entrance line is long without a timed slot.
- Visit the Pantheon early morning before tour groups arrive — it's free and takes only twenty minutes but is unforgettable in quiet light.
- Toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain at night, when the crowds thin and the lighting is best.
- Spend an afternoon in Trastevere, Rome's most atmospheric neighborhood for an unhurried dinner.
Local Tips
Rome's tap water is safe and free at the city's iron drinking fountains, called 'nasoni'. Many smaller shops and churches close for a few hours in early afternoon, so plan sightseeing accordingly. A cover charge (coperto) is standard at restaurants and is not a scam.
