Prague
Gothic spires and cobblestone lanes, largely untouched by wartime damage.
Overview
Prague survived the 20th century with its medieval core almost fully intact, which is why the view from Charles Bridge at sunrise looks much the same as it did centuries ago. The city splits neatly across the Vltava River, with the castle district on one side and the Old Town's astronomical clock and market square on the other.
Getting There
Václav Havel Airport (PRG) connects to the center via bus and metro in about 40 minutes, or a direct Airport Express bus to the main train station. The city's tram and metro network is inexpensive and easy to navigate.
Top Things to Do
- Cross Charles Bridge before 7am to see it without the crowds that arrive by mid-morning.
- Tour Prague Castle complex, including St. Vitus Cathedral, allowing at least half a day.
- Watch the Astronomical Clock's hourly show once, then explore the quieter lanes of the Old Town beyond it.
- Cross to the Lesser Town and climb Petřín Hill for a quiet park and a scaled-down Eiffel Tower replica.
Local Tips
Prague remains one of Europe's most affordable capitals for food and beer, though prices near the main square run higher — walk a few blocks for local rates. Tram and metro tickets must be validated immediately on boarding; inspectors do fine tourists.
